In-house Digitisation or Outsource?
- Development of sound document transfer and digital imaging project experience by "doing it" (project management, familiarity with technology, etc.)
- More control over the entire data creation process as well as handling and storage of fragile and rare originals
- Requirements for sound and image quality, analogue - digital sound conversion, access and scanning can be adjusted as work is proceeding instead of defined up front
- Direct participation in development of sound file, text and image collections that best suits the library organisation and their users
- Requires large initial and ongoing financial investment in professional equipment, trained staff
- Longer time needed to implement sound data acquisition process and technical infrastructure
- Staffing expertise not always available
- Institution must accept costs for network implementation, network downtime, equipment failure, training of staff, etc.
- Lack of standards and best practices (cognitive, content descriptors)
