Kazuo Ohno is an extraordinary figure of the Japanese butoh dance and one of the most interesting personalities in the world theatre scene of the last decades. On October, 27th 2001, on the occasion of his 95th birthday, the Maestro signed an agreement in Tokyo, sanctioning the donation of a copy of the materials contained in his archive to the Department of Music and Performing Arts of the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna. Such material has recently been properly rearranged by Toshio Mizohata. This agreement was stipulated between Ohno’s son Yoshito and the former director of the Department Lorenzo Bianconi thanks to the invaluable mediation of Marie Perchiazzi of ART Planning, who is the European representative for Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio. The Department has the exclusive over this material in Italy. It will promote it and make it accessible to researchers or anyone who might be interested in consulting the archive, forwarding studies and manifestations relating to it. After this first donation, it is the Maestro and his son’s intention to make further equal donations to other institutions in Europe and in the rest of the world. The records insofar donated includes different tipologies of precious documents, such as: audiovisual documents (video and DVD) from all over the world on Kazuo Ohno and his performances, all the essays and photo books published in Japan, a big collection of posters and panels with life-size photographs. Particularly valuable are 17 computer files will be available as soon as the translation of their indexes in English is completed. The files contain valuable documents, covering the period from the 40s up to this day, such as: photographs, theatre programmes, press releases in several western languages and in Japanese, letters, autograph writings and designs by Ohno.
